В США подразделяется на психологическую и/или материальную помощь семье или отдельному лицу (индивидуальное обслуживание), групповую помощь и работу над местными программами социального планирования, по координации местных программ социальной помощи и поискам соответствующих ресурсов. К первым попыткам разработки программ социальной помощи в стране относится создание Дж. Аддамс [ Addams, Jane] в 1889 колонии для обездоленных "Халл-Хаус" [Hull House] в г. Чикаго и аналогичных колоний в Нью-Йорке (1886), Бостоне (1891) и других городах. В 1912 социальный раздел программы Прогрессивной партии [ Progressive Party] был разработан комитетом по трудовым нормам Национальной конференции благотворительных и исправительных обществ [National Conference of Charities and Correction], возглавлявшейся Дж. Аддамс. Первая программа подготовки социальных работников была разработана по инициативе Нью-Йоркского общества благотворительных организаций [New York Charity Organization Society] в 1898. К 1919 социальные работники действовали в таких сферах, как медицинская и психиатрическая помощь, воспитание детей, социальная работа в школах и семьях.
